Beth > Ely Zimmerman organized an "Encounter Weekend" between HUC students and Palestinians at the Neve Shalom School for peace. The experience was one of the most challenging parts of my Year-in-Israel. Unlike the Encounter Trip in Bethlehem, the Palestinians we talked with knew very little about Judaism or Jews, and few were involved in other peace or nonviolence activities. The hard conversations we had gave me new insight into the complexity of the conflict and the depth of my own entanglement in it as part of the Jewish people.
The first night, the entertainment was this Palestinian protest musician.
Beth > One of the Palestinians I spent a long time talking to during the weekend. He was more liberal than most of the other Palestinians in our dialogue group because he had spent a number of years living in Jordan while training to be a pharmacist. Still, his misconceptions about Israel were revealing; during a heated discussion in which I had been arguing about the right of the Jewish people to their own state, he threw up his arms in frustration. "It's fine, you can have your state!," he said in exasperation. "But you can't have the Nile! There have to be limits to your borders, okay?" It took me a few moments before I was able to respond.
Beth > With a bunch of the friendly guys from my dialogue group.
Beth > More guys from my dialogue group.
Beth > A few of the Palestinian facilitators. Every group had one Palestinian facilitator and one Israeli Jewish facilitator.
Beth > My dialogue group.
Beth > My dialogue group - I think
Beth > A few of the translators. All of the dialogue work was done in Arabic or English and then translated.
Beth > Najwa, one of the Palestinian women in my dialogue group and I. She held one of the most hardline positions in the group and wasn't exactly friendly in between sessions, either. But a comment she made on the first day stuck with me : she explained that the reason she had come to the retreat was to make sure we understood that not all Palestinians were terrorists. At the end of the weekend, as we said goodbye, we talked about what we had in common as women who love our people. Then we took this picture.
