Beth > After a bit of an adventure getting from the Kiev airport to the office of the Reform Jewish Movement in Kiev, I finally arrived and met up with the other HUC students who were based out of Kiev. Anya, the girl who ended up being my translator in Dnepoproderzinsk, took me and Amy on a brief tour of the city before we departed for Cherkassy.
Beth > A week later . . .
I got back from Dnepoproderzinsk at about 7 AM, and after a quick shower in Amy's hotel room, the whole group of HUC students in Kiev went to visit Baba Yar, the site of the major massacre of Ukrainian Jewry during the Holocaust. This was the central area where people gathered when they first arrived. The emptyness was haunting.
Beth > Ukrainian children visiting the monument to the children killed at Baba Yar.
Beth > The Jewish Agency's monument to Baba Yar is shaped like a Star of David. We stood here to say El Malei Rachamim.
Beth > The Soviet monument to Baba Yar.
Beth > The huge Soviet memorial to Baba Yar is criticized for not including any reference to the fact that the people who were massacred were Jews. This plaque on the monument, which does not mention the word "Jew," but is written in Yiddish, is the closest thing.
Beth > Golda Meir came from Kiev!
