Beth > Our next stop was Zvinagorodka, a much smaller and poorer town than Cherkassy. Amy and I explained to Violetta, the head of the Jewish community there, that we just wanted to eat a quick, simple lunch so that we could spend the little time we had in Zvinigorodka visiting a few of the home-bound members of the community. But Ukrainian hospitality trumped our request - so here we are eating a very slow, fancy lunch. During the meal, Amy and I tried to find out from Violetta what would be happening at the seder that night. We agreed that Violetta and other community members would lead the seder, but that Amy and I would contribute songs and teachings throughout the evening.
Beth > Amy's lunch. With kasha! They really do eat lots of kasha in Ukraine, just like your grandma promised you. It's regularly available the way rice is here.
Beth > The seder room begins to fill. Approximately 30 seconds before the seder was set to begin, Violetta turned to our translator, Iyra, and said something to her in Russian. Then Iyra turned to me and Amy and said, "Girls! YOU are leading the seder!" So much for our discussion with Violetta . . . We did a pretty good job, though :-)
Beth > The spread of side dishes / hors d'oeuvres at the Seder in Zvinagorodka. I took this picture because we thought it was pretty amazing that they were serving pork at a Pesach seder, but it turns out it was chicken sausage.
