Beth > So how did I end up in Ukraine in the first place? For a few years, HUC-JIR has been running a "Pesach Project" sending first-year rabbinical students to the Former Soviet Union to help emerging Reform Jewish communities celebrate Passover. My partner, fellow rabbinical student Amy Rossel, and I traveled to two towns about three hours south of Kiev. Our first stop: the small city of Cherkassy. Here we are with Gala, the head of the community, and the Jewish youth group.
Beth > Amy and I with Sasha, the driver who took us to Cherkassy from Kiev. He drove really fast, but after we got to know our next driver, we missed him a lot.
Beth > Iyra, our wonderful translator; Peter Nikolayovich, our Colombo-lookalike driver who got lost every time we went anywhere and always drove at 10 mph; Amy and me.
Beth > Amy and I, Gala, Gala's niece Lyena (the youth group advisor), and one of the teachers in the Hebrew school, posing with the terrific makeshift inflatable Pharaoh she created.
Beth > Dima had mastered the art of making the Pharaoh dance.
Beth > The Cherkassy Hebrew school learns about Passover.
Beth > Sending plagues on the inflatable Pharoah.

Beth > The kids in Cherkassy love to dance!
