Beth > My classmate (and roommate for the month of August) Cari and I took a weekend to get out of Jerusalem and go down to the Negev, the desert in the south of Israel. We stayed in Mitzpeh Ramon, home of the world's largest crater. First stop: a restaurant that served its meals with a cucumber heart garnish.
Beth > When we managed to translate one of the words on the Hebrew menu as "recommended," we decided to go with those items. "American style sausage with chimichurri sauce" was one of those items . . . who would have thought?
Beth > Way beyond the overly creative meals, the most bizarre thing about the restaurant was the decor. It was a HUGE place, especially for such a little town. Part of it was set up as a club, with a dance floor and speaker system (that was playing Tracy Chapman as we ate), and a big movie screen showing American basketball. As you see in this picture, part of it was furnished by Ikea in a sort of cozy coffeehouse style with a woodburning stove.
Beth > And part of it was a weird combination of exposed brick and lavender painted walls and fancy chandeliers. And this is Cari with our waiter, who was wearing a Scottish soccer jersey, who couldn't really speak English but made fun of our Hebrew, and who tried to pick us up in the bathroom.
Beth > Our first night in MItzpeh Ramon, the youth hostel was full. Who ever heard of a youth hostel being full? Especially one in the middle of nowhere. But we stayed at the SPNI Field School instead.
Beth > Cari at the Field School. We don't really understand why it's called a school - it mostly just seems like a kibbutz hotel without the kibbutz.
Beth > Friday morning, we visited the Llama Farm in Mitzpeh Ramon. But before we saw the llamas, we saw this adorable little lamb.
Beth > And this very bizarre looking goose.
Beth > Cari and a llama!
